Winery Klumpp
Winery Klumpp is a family business founded in 1983. Dad (administration) and mom (bank employee) decided to completely change course and start a wine company. They started making wine in their garage, the first few years they made about 800 bottles per year. In 2003, brothers Andreas and Markus took over the now 15 hectare company. In 2024 you can think of at least 32 hectares that Andreas (vineyard) and Markus (wine cellar) manage. They planted this enormous expansion themselves using plant material from Burgundy.
Baden is also the warmest and sunniest wine region in Germany. The Vosges keep out wind and rain from the west, the Odenwald and the Black Forest ensure that the cold winds from the north and east do not reach Baden. The climate and soil ensure that the Burgundian grape varieties flourish in Baden. In addition to Spätburgunder, you will find Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay and Auxerrois here.
The Klumpp family is located in a northern part of Baden, near Kraichgau, a subregion of the warm southern German Baden. The limestone in the soil is characteristic, but that is a general statement. In fact, the area has an enormous variety of soil types, which greatly increases the variety of styles makes. Various grapes on various soils, it is 'Our biggest luck', according to Andreas.
The Burgundian influence is not only found in the vineyard. In the cellar, everything is focused on refinement. All 190 (!) different plots are fermented separately (spontaneously). The cellar is therefore full of small stainless steel tanks. The only intervention during fermentation is cooling the barrels for more freshness and aroma. Almost all wines are matured in wood. 'Andy' Andreas is a gifted barrel taster. He developed this skill during his career at other companies. For example, he helped at Christmann, Von Winningen, Hamilton Russel and a number of companies in Vosne Romanee. Now he mainly uses barrels from Burgundy.
With these ingredients and philosophies, the Klumpp family makes spectacular terroir-driven top wines that are precise and accurate as only Germans can!
