About Jean Foillard
Most people know winemaker Jean Foillard as a natural wine pioneer from Beaujolais who makes fairly solid, majestic gamay wines in the cru Morgon. His Nouveau wine is also a bit more solid than most Primeurs.
The Gang Without Sulphur, that's where our Jean belongs. This unofficial club of winegrowers are followers of Jules Chauvet, and started producing natural wines in Beaujolais around the mid-80s. As honest and pure as possible, the term 'natural wine' did not exist yet. We can now say that they are pioneers, as guardians of True Wine.
Jean Foillard started in 1980 when he took over the domain from his father. Most of the Foillard vineyards are located on the famous hill Côte du Py and is the pride of Morgon.
About the wine:
Making wine from old vines, no chemical pesticides, late picking, good sorting of the grapes, no chaptalization, no filtration, no additives and minimal or no sulfite added. The style of Jean Foillard is thus at odds with the many tutti frutti Beaujolais (Primeur) wines that taste of bubblegum and banana. The wines of Jean Foillard are characteristically elegant. Clean, juicy but structured, complex fruity and silky smooth.
